Alderman's Support of Foes Won't Deter Bid by Children's Museum
Chicago Children's Museum officials said Thursday they would proceed
with a plan to move to Grant Park, despite opposition to the project
from Ald. Burton Natarus (42nd).
In a meeting with hundreds of residents Wednesday, Natarus said he
would not support the museum's move because it would increase traffic
along Randolph Street. The alderman, who sits on the Chicago Plan
Commission, said he would not vote in favor of the building permit the
museum would eventually need.
The museum hopes to move from Navy Pier to the site underneath the
fieldhouse at Daley Bicentennial Plaza, on the northern end of Grant
Park. It plans to build a new fieldhouse connected to a three-story
underground museum.
On Thursday, museum officials remained undeterred. They said they had
received support from a majority of civic organizations. Museum
spokeswoman Breelyn Pete said officials hope to address some of the
residents' concerns once a plan for the site is "developed and presented
in its entirety."
